Located on Fraser Island’s eastern side, Lake Wabby is the deepest perched dune lake at 11.4 meters. Since this freshwater lake’s acidity level is lower than other Fraser Island lakes, 13 species of fish habitat these waters. Notable among them are the endangered honey blue-eye, rainbow fish, and catfish.

Entry to this lake was once restricted to the men of the Butchulla tribe, who used it as their warrior training zone. Today, this lake holds a significant place in the lives of the Butchulla people. What’s so special about Lake Wabby?

It’s both a window lake and a barrage lake. Window lakes are formed by a natural depression in the sand that exposes the water table. When a sandmass blocks the water flowing from a natural spring, barrage lakes are formed.

Within a hundred years from now, Lake Wabby may no longer exist. Since it’s a barrage lake, the giant sand blow bordering the lake is slowly moving into its emerald green waters. Eventually, they will swallow the entire lake and  Lake Wabby will be a thing of the past.
